Cara Bauermeister
Cara Bauermeister's work draws on her fascination with the material culture of the past, art history and her love of the garden. Her designs pay homage to the past while she re-envisions her pieces from a contemporary setting in her Garden Studio in Somerset West, Cape Town.
Cara holds a Masters degree in Fine Art (UCT) and a background in museum and contemporary art archiving and curation at the South African National Gallery and Natural History Museum- all of which informs her ceramic practise.
The journey with clay started after several years of lecturing at the Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT) and a move to the countryside and with it an old Cape Garden. The garden led to veracious planting and digging and the inevitable search for the perfect vase.
A marvelous exploration followed, and continuous, through the garden, into the archive and studio, and ultimately to the mantle with fresh flowers. Her quest to create beautiful vessels is underpinned by the belief that objects should pay homage to where they come from, but they should not just be a mere reproductions. We are inundated with so many objects that we have a responsibility, when adding another, that it is created with intention and integrity rather than just being another poached commodity.
All items made by Cara are her original designs that are made with great care and intention. The work is not rushed because the ultimate goal is to create something of fine craftsmanship, intriguing design and classic proportions to last a lifetime and beyond.
Amongst others Cara's work has appeared in the World of Interiors, House & Garden(UK) and Homes & Antiques.
